sorry, i posted this in the general networking forum before i saw this forum, and i realised this forum would be more fitting:

OK, i have a wireless network at home. it has 2 vista laptops(wireless connection) an XP laptop(wireless connection), and a vista desktop(direct local connection)

all have been assigned static ip addresses and access the internet with no problems, where im getting a problem is with printer and file sharing.

1 of the vista laptops, the xp laptop, and the vista desktop are in the same workgroup(had to clear it up cause i know id get someone mentioning), the last one i just havent gotten to yet, i wanna work out all compatibiity issues between differant OS' and connection types first.

k,

ok the vista desktop under network i see both the laptops in the workgroup, and can access the vista laptop perfectly and not the xp

on the vista laptop, it can only see the vista desktop but can't connect to it

on the xp laptop if i click view workgroup computers in my network places i get this error: "Homegroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

i am confused to death at this,

any help is GREATLY appreciated thank.

I have an update

i ran the set up home or office network wizard on my xp laptop and that fixed its problems,

everything now works except, both computers cannot connect to the desktop, which was my main reason for setting up the workgroup so i could print anywhere in the house.

First off, can you ping by computer name between all of the computers? That's the first thing to get working.

Let's see this for each of the computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Just as an update, due to other reasons the desktop is currently on a DHCP ip, i keep meaning to set up its static, the laptop has a static of 192.168.0.110

neither computer can ping eachother but, the desktop can access laptops shared files, laptop cannot access desktop.

im stumped on this one, im usually not to bad with network configurations...

Well, if they can't ping, the top suspect is a firewall.

Did you disable ALL firewalls to see if you can get it working? If so, then we can figure out how to configure the firewall properly. You should also only have one firewall running.

I don't see a firewall there.

Connect the laptop with a wired connection, then boot each of the computers in Safe Mode with Networking, let's see if you can ping each way by name in that configuration.

Hi Cruncher,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

I looked over your log and it appears that you have Norton Internet Security installed, which does have a Firewall that needs to be properly configured for media sharing. Make sure that the Windows Firewall is disabled, as you never want to have more than one Firewall running or you may experience conflicts.

Please let me know what version of Norton Internet Security you have installed so that I can provide you with the correct configuration steps. You can determine the version by opening Norton Internet Security and choosing "Help->About."

Thank you,
Mike

sorry, i posted this in the general networking forum before i saw this forum, and i realised this forum would be more fitting:

Cruncher

uhm, the norton was on my dads comp, but he has recently removed it, i guess some stuff still appears on the hijack this log? but anyway i am doubtful thats the issue, i think the problem lies on the desktop as, all 3 laptops in the house can ping and access eachother just not the desktop.

EDIT: im also fairly certain that norton doesnt start up if you run in safe mode.
