Hi,

I have my mother-in-laws HP laptop (see specs below) that had a hard drive failure a few weeks ago. Ordered new drive & the ordered new recovery disks from HP since I could not clone the old drive (that would have been to easy right).
Anyway, I finally got the computer restored back to "factory condition" only now the darn thing won't install windows updates.

Here is a list of things I have tried so you don't repeat anything that has already been a failure:

Update the WU manager (or what ever they call it) and it fails to install.

Downloaded SP2 for manual install it, again failure (error 0x8000FFFF).

MS fix listed here Error code 0x80000FFF when you download updates on a Windows Vista-based computer by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update

Windows Update Error Code 8024A000 - Microsoft Answers

Hopefully someone here can help...I would really like to get this machine back to my mother-in-law in perfect working order!

System Specs (that I thought relevant) from HP website:
Model (if below info. is not enough): DV6871US
Microprocessor:
1.83 GHz Intel Centrino Processor Technology featuring Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5550
Memory:
3072 MB
Video Graphics:
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
Video Memory:
Up to 1535 MB (256MB dedicated)
Hard Drive: Upgraded to 700 GB (non-factory, as mentioned above the original HD failed recently)
Operating System:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1

well that didn't work. Good attempt.
Oh, I am pretty darn sure I clicked to agree to the updates but heck at this point I am not sure of anything! How can I make sure of this...Google was not much help.

What are the security setting in your browser ,you might have them set too high and this is causing a problem, have you installed any other software after you have recovered your system to factory default, also disable your anti virus this might be causing a problem but doubtful, did you update any drivers since the new install,graphics/etc?

HAVE YOU MANUALLY TRIED TO INSTALL SP2 SINCE YOU FLASHED THE BIOS,IF YOU LOOK AT THE LINK I GAVE YOU FOR H/P,IT SAYS FOR THAT MODEL YOU MUST FLASH THE BIOS BEFORE INSTALLING SP2,Do you need any particular software thats on the recovery disc, you could also do a clean install of vista if you have a vista disc, back up all your drivers before the new install,or d/l them from the link after the clean install,or start from scratch again and reload the recovery disc, make sure you follow all the prompts, another thing to check is ,make sure the date, and time is set correctly,if it is not you wont be able to install updates

Checked the IE Security settings & even dropped them down. No luck! I will try the Start up Repair in the morning & let you know how it goes. Keep the ideas coming though!

My first thought was anti-virus so I just completely removed it (I know it's not safe to be browsing around without but I am only browsing here, HP & MS at the moment so I figure I am at least fairly safe).

If it was up to me I would just do a clean install of vista & download all the drivers from HP but the mother-in-law insisted that she uses some of the pre-installed programs (not that any of them couldn't be replaced by free stuff)!

okay before I crash for the night I had this thought...I might have over looked the obvious. When I performed the recovery I do not recall inputting the Windows Product key...I assume it would at least be asking me to Activate Windows by now just as if it were a clean install. Any thoughts?

some recovery discs have the key (integrated)right click my computer, click properties to see if activated, even if it was not activated it would still d/l updates, you would have 30days grace

scan your computer with this tool before you do another recovery,if you have a vista disc you could install it on another partition, you will need to partition your hdd,see then if you can d/l updates on the new partition,If so do another recovery with the recovery disc, follow the prompts,If your still unable to d/l updates you will have to contact h/p for advice,Are you sure the date is set correctly and year/?

Here's an update...
The scanner that bro has recommended is still running.

For giggle I opened up the Update Manager to try again. This time I got error code 80080005 don't know if this will help in the search for a solution or not...I may have found one else ware on the net but I am awaiting the scanner to finish 37 mins in and only 1/2 way done...guess I'll check on it in the morning.

An update for all that care...I have exhausted my self on finding a solution & I appreciate all the help you have give. But alas I have broke down & inserted the Recovery Disks. The first thing I plan to do is hit the update button when the recovery is complete. I'll let you know how it goes!

:upset: That was a waste of 6 hours. Still exactly where I was when I started. Guess I'll have to break down & call MS. :sigh:
