vista backup and restore problem

I have vista premium. When I try to use backup or system restore it won't work at all. I still get reminders to automatically restore. When I try to do it I get the error message:file backup cannot be performed.the task image is corrupt or has been tampered with 0x80041321, but backup did work the first time I used it. someone please help me! I'm lost.
