a pc i built for my friend worked fine for 8 mths. it is a xp2000 running win xp pro. when it starts now it passes the boot from ide0 saying not found, however when i enter the cmos it recognises the hdd no problems. does this sound like a virus in the boot files..if so any ideas?!!
he has nav2002 but isnt sure if he opened a dodgy e-mail...

well, it might be a virus, but it might be many other things messing up the boot sector...did you try booting up in the safe mode ? and is this the only HD ?....try switching IDE ports. You can also try making your *ROM bootable and booting from the xp cd and do some troubleshooting and maybe try to repair the boot sector...I forget the comand fixboot/mbr or something like that...if you dont have boot disk, look here
