Occasionally when I boot my XP E-machine in the morning I get a little icon in the lower right corner of screen telling me my virus protection is turned off. I go to the security center and sure enough it is off. I cannot turn it on unless I uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials followed by downloading a new Microsoft Security Essentials which turns it back on.

Can anyone tell me how to prevent this from happening. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by getting "checked out by security"?

This morning when the virus protection was turned off clicked the update button on Microsoft Security Essentials. The virus protection was then turned back on.

Infections usually turn AV programs off and by "checked out by security" - joeten means for you to open a new thread in the Virus & Trojan section for the forum's security experts to check your system for viruses/malware, but as a quick check - from Start - Run - type mrt.exe then press Enter and follow the prompts.

Edit...Did you have another AV program installed before you installed MSE and if so how did you uninstall it ?

I ran a quick scan using mrt.exe and it said nothing was found. About 3 weeks ago I installed a malware program I obtained from malwarebytes.org. I already had Microsoft Essentials installed at the time. The problem began shortly thereafter. The malwarebytes program was removed several days ago using the add or remove option on the Control Panel.

The symptoms you are showing is usually associated with a virus or which MSE, MRT, and Malwarebytes may not be able to detect. Due to Forum rules we cannot comment or assist in Virus removal. Please click on the link Joe provided in post #2 or in the link above and do those things and post in that section of the forum.

I removed the check mark from the updater box under startup tab in System Config. Utility and it seemed to do the trick. When I rebooted the window and icon did not appear. Thank you so much.

You want MSE to update. If your Anti-Virus software won't update, you are infected. The advice still stands.

The problem mysteriously has gone away. I reloaded and updated MSE a couple of times. So I don't know what happened but I have not had the warning and the virus protection turned off the last 5 or 6 times I've started the machine. Keeping fingers crossed.
