I use Webroot for virus protection and security which comes with LastPass that can log you into sites and Webroot also syncs files across devices. I've been told by Webroot that they will no longer do the syncing of files anymore! I travel a lot and instead of lugging my heavy expensive laptop with me everywhere I'll take my surface pro or kindle with me and because Webroot syncs files, I can work on a file save it and its changed everywhere. I don't know what I'm going to do when my membership is up. Does anyone know of another service that offers protection, security, password protection and file syncing? I've been using Webroot for at least 20 years and I can even assess files on my phone if I need to. I have no idea where to start to find something that offers all of this. Anyone have any suggestions? I have PCs and sync through several devices. Thanks for any help out there.

Windows Security (Defender) comes with Windows. It works seamlessly with the Windows OS. All updates come from Windows Updates. This app also has the smallest footprint that takes up less resources and protects just as well as the paid AV programs. It is very safe and it's Free.

I suppose but is Windows Security really safe?
It's as safe as any 3rd Party AV, and as spunk.funk says, since it's integrated into Windows, uses fewer system resources.

Do not confuse the program integrated into W10 and W11 with earlier programs with a similar name, it is very much improved.

What you're usually paying for with a 3rd party AV, is the interface, and a certain amount of configurability. But as most people don't really need to (or know how to properly) configure their security, they're generally just paying for a familiar interface.

Wow ok. I didn't think Windows Defender was as good at antivirus & firewall protection as something you pay for. Do you know of any good sync programs for PC & Android devices? And yes I'm using Windows 11 Pro and syncing files between that and my Surface Pro, Desktop and one other device but can't remember the name... anyway I was using Webroot which offers Syncing files between several devices. I do not backup to the cloud, don't trust it really, I backup to a device. I have so much stuff it would be too expensive for me to store in the cloud anyway. Webroot offered 25Gs to use for syncing or backing up files. I just used it for syncing and had to be careful of not going over the limit.

Last Pass has a free version . So you should be able to use that to continue for your passwords . Another free password program is Bitwarden. For syncing files I like Google Drive for all my devices which is free unless you need alot of space. I also use One Drive from Microsoft which is Free. For Security there are several free programs AVG ,Avira , Zonealarm or even Windows Defender which has ranked pretty high up lately . I have used Zonealarm and liked it . I now use McAfee because I get it free from my network provider.

Google Drive and One Drive I don't like, lost files with them but it could've been my error. I'll use Windows Defender since people are telling me its just as good as the paid programs. I can also use Brave for my passwords. Hate losing LastPass through Webroot but I wouldn't trust the free version and it might have limitations on how many computers I can use it with. Thanks Lazersharp.

And thanks Gary R! I'll check out those links. I'm getting ready to have a tendon repaired on my shoulder first week in Aug and I'm trying to get all of this stuff out of the way because I've been told I'm going to be in a lot of pain for awhile. And my left is my dominant hand... so typing is going to suck for awhile after.

I'm nervous about it. I'm a performer but I also have a little dog walking/sitting business for the last 20 yrs in NYC. I tore my labrum 13 yrs ago and now its the tendon, although the labrum hasn't gotten any worse so the PT and stuff I've done to prevent further injury to that has worked. But as you know these things don't heal and its only going to get worse so surgery it is. I tolerate pain well (you learn that dancing, dancing hurts but you do it anyway) but I've never had surgery so have no idea what to expect. I've got some time before this happens so trying to tie up loose ends and set everything up for a one armed person, I live alone so no help with daily stuff. OMG this is really going to suck.

Thanks again for your help.

If your Doctor recommends surgery, then I'd follow his/her advice, especially the post surgery advice.

It's amazing how many people "get restless" and fail to do this, thinking that they can shorten their post surgery recovery time by pushing things just that bit too much, and as a result usually end up by acheiving the very opposite.

In my experience the idea of surgery is generally much worse than the actual reality, so think positively, and look forward to when it's all over, and you're fully recovered and able to function normally again.

Just wish it was already 6 months later! Like I said I used to dance so I know good pain from bad pain. I have an ex-husband who pushed too hard after elbow surgery and his muscle snapped back and froze. It'll never be straight again. I know it'll be tough but I also know the pain will end. If I don't get surgery, I'll have to compensate for that left shoulder and deal with pain forever... I prefer for the pain to have an end date. ;)

It's interesting how the discussion went from looking for an alternative to file synchronization to surgery :) On the topic, I use Avast Endpoint Protection. There's also the option of a virtual machine via remote access, but it seems too complicated.

Get well!

I use Teamviewer to connect remotely, its free but I've found that syncing files is really the best. Sometimes here in NYC where our internet cuts out off and on, thanks to limited providers and old buildings, when the internet cuts out I can't reach my computer and if I can't go home to reconnect or in some cases reboot I can't connect remotely. So syncing files as I change them has been my best option. Webroot unfortunately sold out recently so what I've been doing for 20 yrs is going to stop soon. Which is why I'm at a loss for what is currently out there. Everyone used to $50 you to death but now its $100+ and I'm talking per month. Since I haven't keep tabs on whats out there I want to make sure I'm not overpaying for honestly just a simple sync program. I could go over 25Gs easily with my files so I've had to really pick and choose what I sync. I'll need something that has cloud storage and keeps everything updated. This is going to be harder than I thought... I know enough to really screw stuff up but not enough to know when I'm paying for stuff I'll never use! With some of those links Gary R posted I can't tell if they store stuff online for me or if I have to provide my own cloud storage for the program to sync to... like I said I know just enough to really screw myself...

I also wanted to write that I sometimes use remote access for this purpose. But I quit Teamviewer because it was too expensive and the constant updates were annoying. recently I found a great alternative - Getscreen.me. The software works from the browser, so it is very convenient to share files and connect to a stationary remote computer at any time. And if they write that it's free for non-commercial use, it really is.

Many folks use Microsoft 365 with 5 GB free storage. Apps like Good Sync don't use the cloud. Free with limitations. About $40 for full version.

I have used paid Lastpass for years I believe it's $35 a year and I can't say there is any real difference between paid and free versions I have noticed but I believe in paying for what I use which is why I pay for it and I don't see any limit on multiple devices as I use 3 pcs and iPhone with it. The other reason I pay for it is multiple devices free allows only 1 device usage at a time.
Today's issues aren't virus, so why use any free or paid AV anyway? Windows Security is better than most and all you need for most environments. AV programs are "dinosaurs" IMHO!
