very long delays

1433 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  SPEEDO
After upgrading to xp pro from 98se I'm finding very long delays when opning programs. It's always the first program i open after xp loads. i.e. if i click on the the ie icon nothing happens for a bout 3 to 5 minutes. my system stays idle and than after 3 minutes or so, the hd led will blink every other second and about a minute later the broswer will open. Durning the wait I know the system isn't frozen cause i can still have control of the mouse icon. Once i get over this hump things run pretty smoothly. The question is ... is this caused by XP? or something else? please help.

I have noticed that on xp the system take a little long to fully boot eventhough you see a desktop and can move the mouse it still is loading stuff in the back ground. Also the delay may becuased byt the big jump from 98SE to XP. Can you tell us what you system stats are that might help us narrow the problem.
ermm stats?

sorry newbie me ask what is and how can i get system stats?
I have a soyo dragon plus platnum mobo...256k mem...20 gig drive...nvida 340 vid...amd athlon 1.3.
That is exactly what I was asking for. I think your best bet is to upgrade your memory. I think 256M Memory is the minimum for XP but I could be wrong but I think your best bet is to upgrade to 512 MB for xp. The only other suggestion I have is back up all your important data and format and do a fresh install of XP there my be a conflicting application from 98 running and cuasing the slow down.

You may need to do a clean install of XP instead of upgrading, This can be done with the upgrade CD as long as you have your Win98 CD available.........................:D
how

I tried to that but it keeps telling me i need format my drive cause i already have xp. as far as im concern im really think xp suck! it making me very pissed that I have to wait 5 minutes in order to open a browser or run a prgram.

What brand of hard drive are you using?

You could write zero's to the drive bringing it back to almost like new condition using the floppy that came with your drive.

If you don't have the floppy go to the mfgs. website and find the utility that writes zero's and download it. Of course this will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, But it will be clean.

Or you can go here and download a Win. 98 boot disk.

I think you need to download the red one that will create a boot disk in windows.

Boot to this newly made Win98 floppy selecting start computer without CD-Rom support.

At the A:> prompt type fdisk /mbr.......Enter.....This will be a quick operation you will probably think it didn't do anything but it did.

After that type fdisk..........Enter

At the prompt do you want to enable large disk support select yes.

Now you want to delete any partitions that are on the drive by selectin option 3.

Then selecting the partitions you want to delete.

Once this is done you should be able to change your boot sequence in the bios to boot from CD first and save. Insert the Win. XP CD into the drive and reboot the computer to start the install.
