My client has Verizon DSL connected to a Westell 6100 modem, which is connected to a Linksys WRT54G router. I reset the router to default settings. Ipconfig /all displayed:
IP Address: 192.168.1.100
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1
NetBIOS over TCPIP: Disabled
etc etc

The PC (Windows XP) was configured to automatically accept network info. However, no web pages came up and everytime I attempted to log into the router, I got a page saying Firmware Upgrade, where I had to find a firmware file on the hdd and hit apply. There was also a reset button which did nothing. After downloading and updating with the latest drivers (FW_WRT54Gv5v6_1.02.8.001_US_20091005.bin) it said Upgrade Successful, with no other buttons on the screen. I retyped in the default gateway into the URL to find the Upgrade Firmware page again, as if I never upgraded in the first place. I reset the router again, along with the modem this time, nothing changed.

Then I connected the computer straight to the modem and typed in the default gateway. I got to a configuration status page which said PPP was disconnected, and everytime I clicked connect, it timed out.

A friend suggested I call Verizon because they have to do something to get the modem working. He also said its possible the router may need to be replaced. Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

First off, if it keeps coming to the firmware page, something is amiss.

Try resetting it to defaults by holding the reset for 15 seconds with power on. If a firmware update doesn't take at that point, it's probably toast.

You are trying to update it with the CORRECT firmware for the exact model and hardware version, right? This is a WRT54G and either v5 or v6 hardware, right?

Neither me nor the Verizon Tech Representative know how, but resetting the modem, despite already trying that multiple times last night, fixed it. And the router just magically started working again, no more firmware upgrading. Thanks anyway.
