My Mcafee subscription is almost up. Do I need to uninstall it before turning on defender? Thanks in advance Steve

I would uninstall it and then enable Defender. IMO, most of the AV suites have become bloated with way too much junk.

BTW, if the email you received looked something like this:

it is MALWARE! Do NOT click anything in the message. Simply click the SPAM or Delete icons above the email.

As oscer1 says, yes you need to uninstall McAfee, and the best way to do that is to use the tool that McAfee designed to do it rather than to use the onboard uninstaller that come with the program.

Alternatively uninstall it using RevoUninstaller (free) .... Revo Uninstaller Free .... I usually recommend the portable version.

If after uninstalling McAfee you find that Windows Security has not enabled, then get back to me, as it means there are still remnants of McAfee left on your machine, and I can help you to remove them. This is not usually necessary, but sometimes it is.

As stated, it is suggested to use the MCPR Removal tool in the the first link in post #6; Method #2. While running it it will ask you if it can reboot into Safe Mode to fully uninstall McAfee.
