Since I bought my new laptop [HP G6-2293sa] in January there has been an intermittent clicking noise coming from the hard drive. As it hasn't appeared to affect the performance of the machine, I wondered if the noise was a hyperactive disk drive head parking issue. I downloaded 'Quiethdd' as I'd read it could potentially resolve the problem. Unfortunately I'm not tech savvy and need help using the settings to their best effect.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks ..

intermittent clicking noise
A clicking HDD are the first symptoms to a Failed HDD. Backup all personal files you cherish to an external HDD Immediately, as the HDD will soon stop working.
You can test this theory and diagnose the HDD by downloading the ISO image for Seatools in my signature and burn the Image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the nelwy created CD and run the Short and Long tests on the HDD. If either test fails the HDD needs to be replaced.
If this is a brand new computer, then it is under warranty, send it back and have them replace the HDD.

Okay. As I said before, not tech savvy. Could you possibly explain the steps for using the diagnostic tool in more simplistic terms?

As for backing up ... I don't store anything on my system. Everything is saved on two usb flashdrives.

Ok, Flash drives are volatile and know to fail without warning. This is not a good medium for backup. It's best to have a USB HDD. Remember to also keep files you can't live without on more then one HDD or Flash drive.
For the Diagnostic, download and install IMGBurn from my signature. Download the ISO image for Seatools also in my signature and save it to your desktop. Open IMGBurn and choose to Burn Image to CD browse to the Seatools ISO image on your desktop. When that is complete, restart your computer with the newly created CD. If it doesn't start the CD, then boot into Setup (Bios) to Boot Priority and using your Arrow Key move CD rom drive up to First Boot Device. Save and Exit. You may be able to do this by pressing F12 at bootup. Resstart the computer and you should see the message Press Any Key to Boot From CD. The Seatools CD starts, choose your HDD and run the Short test, and then the Long test. If either test fails, the HDD needs to be replaced. Send back under warranty.

If the clicking if when you are working, not when you are reading/writing to the disk, that might be fine. There are quite a few, especially older hard drives that are clicky. Clicky doesn't always mean they are faililing.

Now if you are hearing the clicking when readng or writing data and during the clicky the system is unresponcive, the disk is failing.

As long as your laptop is new (as you bought it in january it is), it will have at least a SATA2 drive connector. Any notebook 2.5 inch drive with SATA will work in your laptop
