iam using a elite group k7vza mobo with a maxtor 20 gig ata 33 5400 rpm when i added a 40 gig ibm ata 33 7200 i started having probs i have the maxtor as primary master with a dvd burner as primary slave the ibm is on the secondary slave as this is the onnly config that worked.the board recognizes the ibm and works fine for a bit but then the comp just locks.i previousley had a 13 gig 5400 maxtor that worked fine.could the 2 rpm speeds be the prob or just the drive, it is a refurbished one.tried all different configs but as soon as the 40 gig is hooked up probs occur.

Hi,

Need a little bit of clarity here so I can understand better. If you have only one drive on the secondary IDE slot, then you need to have the drive jumpers set to master and have it on the END of the ribbon cable. Is that the way you are set up? Please note, there is nothing wrong with using the IBM on the secondary, but if alone, it MUST Be set to master and in that position on the cable.

I see no reason also why the IBM and the Maxtor won't co-exist on the same cable......assuming that you have the Maxtor jumpers set at Master (please note that most drives come new with jumpers set to Cable Select), and the IBM jumpers set to slave....with the maxtor on the end of the cable and the IBM on the middle of the cable. Anyhow, thought I would throw that in if you decide to move the IBM to the primary slave position. If that does not work, then try both of them on the CS on the jumper settings.

actually think the prob is fixed it now works set as secondary master.there was a bent pin so this may have been the cause but weird that it would work at all without a pin but iam only up and running for 10 min so i,ll have to wait a bit before making final judgement. thnks for the reply
Hi,

Can't look a gift horse in the mouth. Regardless of what fixed it, darn, it is up and running and that is good news. Have a great evening and let us know if we can help further.
