Fast user switching used to work on our XP Home system, but now it does not. When logging off, the button appears, but nothing happens when I click. 'Start-L' locks the computer. I check the setting for user accounts, but each time I go back it is turned off again. I checked the offline files stuff and it's fine.

There was a similar thread with no conclusion:

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the Fast User Switching Service is screwed up.

Go Start>Run>type "services.msc" w/o quotes. Find Fast User Switching Service. It should be set to Automatic. If it is, stop the service if it is running, then restart it. If it is stopped, start it.

Hope it helps

Thanks for the hint BMR777. The service was deactivated, so now I activated, set to automatic, but it won't start. Error message 1058, roughly translated from the German: "the service can not be started. It is deactivated or not connected to to activated hardware"

Any more ideas? I think you are pointing me the right way :)
