user profile service failed the logon

When trying to use a second user account I created for my son (Jacob) after my re-install debacle I get the message:
The user Profile Service failed the logon. The user profile cannot be loaded.
I tried the fixit from here, both using their "fix it for me" option and the manual version of going into regedit - the user account Jacob doesn't even show in there at all -not when the account has been created or after deleting it.
all I see there are these two - mine and updatus user:

I had copied the user folder "Jacob" from a backup (I did the same for my user account too with no problem - all settings were there etc when I first used my account after re-install) and pasted it in the user area - is this the problem?
Edit: an update - I thought it may be because of the name so tried to create another account (jake) and exactly the same thing happens - also when I go into Control Panel>System Properties>User profiles>Settings neither profiles (Jacob nor jake) show up
