I have used the Hauppague HD PVR 1212 with component IN just fine to capture video from my TV's DVR.

Is there any way to use it to directly capture streamed video from a website (e.g. ESPN3.com) that is playing on the computer ?

I suppose you could, if you have standard TV video outputs on your video card. You would then output the video from the PC into the PVR. Otherwise, no, it only works with video input.

There are multiple apps available for recording streaming media. I've used Replay Media Catcher. There are numerous others...there is a list over at videohelp.com
