Hey I have recently salvaged my dads old windows xp toshiba tecra m10 and I want to plug my USB in but when I do nothing happens.
The safely remove hardware icon still shows up which I find odd so I went into safely remove hardware and would you believe it the USB was infact detected. I just can't do anything with it but remove it. I have tried the other 4 ports on the laptop but nothing. Any help guys?

By plug my USB in, what specific USB deivce are you talking about? USB Flash Drive, HDD, CD/DVD drive, camera card reader etc.
If you mean USB Flash drive, go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In Disk Management window is your flash drive showing up there? Is it taking up the same drive letter as another device on the computer? If so, you can right click it and choose Change Drive Letter or path. And choose a drive letter not being used. Or does it say the file system is Unallocated Space, or does it say the Disk is RAW?

Try the flash on another computer. If you can view the files on another computer run Check Disk on it and then try it on this computer. If it fails on another computer then you should Delete Volume (loosing all files, so backup first) and then Right click and Create New Simple Volume.
