I just bought a Casio 496 MIDI Keyboard and a separate USB MIDI Cable. I connected the cable to the keyboard and the computer, and Windows 7 installed a driver. However, there seems to be no audio device associated with the cable in the sound settings, and the software I tried to use with the keyboard, which is supposed to detect key presses, doesn't.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Software. Did the keyboard come with any software? If so, you should start with that software before trying something else.
No, it didn't come with any software. I'm using some software called 'Teaching-You Keyboard Skills' that is supposed to detect the keypresses.

I'm not familiar with the software. It's possible it's not configured correctly, or it doesn't support the keyboard that you are using. Try contacting the software tech support or forum.
