Dear Forum,

Firstly, hello to all! Secondly, my apologies for providing you very helpful lot with another external HDD not recognised based conundrum! The story is outlined below:

I have reached the end of my tether regarding my external hard drive. I've only had the bugger for 6 months and the last couple of weeks my computer comes up with the 'USB device not recognised' type fail. I'm running Windows 7 and have tried turning the device off, plugging it into a different USB port, reinstalling the drivers etc etc.

It has a shed load of very important documents on it so ideally need to avoid a reformat. I was wondering and hopeful that somebody could perhaps offer a helping hand as to how one could overcome this highly annoying problem. The drive isn't visible in My Computer whatsoever. :(

I can hear the drive 'working' so I know that it hasn't failed and have also checked similar issues but couldn't find one identical to mine. It's a Freecom 1TB drive and runs through it's own power source.

Thanks in advance, it's much appreciated.

I realise this may be in the wrong forum and if so I apologise. Reason it's in here is it seems to be a Windows issue from what I can tell...

Make sure you have the correct power adapter that came with the drive. If not, it will cause this problem. Also, be sure you are plugging the power adapter directly into the Wall socket and not through a Surge Protector or Extension cord, as this will diminish the power. You can also remove the HDD from the enclosure and attach it to a USB Adapter, if the logic board in the enclosure has failed.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

The drive is running through the same power socket that came with it and is directly plugged into the socket.

Is there a way of knowing if it's the logic board that's gone without going ahead and removing it from the enclosure?

Cheers.

No. it's just a few screws that keepthe drive in the enclosure. Then you can either use the previously said USB adapter or attach it to your computer as a Slave drive. If the drive doesn't power up, or it makes a scraping noise, then the drive has failed.
