USB card readers

Ok nobody liked my long version of this problem so here is the short version.
Can anyone tell me, when using a usb card reader are you supposed to clik on the tray icon that says SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE and then pick the mass storage drive BEFORE you pull the card from the reader. Or does this only apply if you want to remove the card reader from the PC? I had a card go bad on me and I wonder if I screwed it up because I didnt do it and just pulled the card out.

i think u need to click the remove hardware and then it will tell u that it is safe to remove ur card, reader or whatever u clicked earlier,

hope this helps

Well the way it reads after I clik on "safely remove hardware" is
"safely remove USB mass storage device - drives (G:, H:,)"
"safely remove USB mass storage device - drive (I:)

If I clik on one of them it then says Safe To Remove Hardware
The USB Mass Storage Device 'device can now be safely removed from the system

This removes that particular DRIVE from device mgr.
I have to reboot to bring that particular drive back. It wont come back on its own.
So if you are right then my win XP must be messed up.
after u remove the drive, and reinstall it, win xp should recognize it again and install it at that point.

hope this helps

If I want to put a different card in the reader I would have to reboot each time. The only way to get the drive back is to reboot the computer. Thats why Im thinking you dont have to go through this procedure unless I want to remove the complete card reader.
OR is my win xp messed up.
I always pull my card straight out, BUT do NOT pull the card while it is in the process of reading\writing or it may well damage the card, but there is no risk just pulling the card when it has finished what it's doing IMHO.
Unlike other drives where they may be spinning while plugged in, these only work when instructed to read or write to the card, thats why it's safe IMO, using the safely remove feature will effectively uninstall the hub (card reader) itself, not the card, so feel free to pull the cards without worry so long as it isn't working at the time.
Thanx thats what I determined looking around on the web. I got confused and started thinkng there was something wrong with my system everytime I tried to "Safely remove hardware"
