Do you have the link to the one you bought on eBay? I have received bad adapters when I was going cheap.

Also, does this one include a separate power cord for it? If this is a desktop drive, you absolutely need to power it with the included power brick. You can sometimes get away with not using it on a laptop drive, if you are using a powered USB port.

a ide drive does show up in device manager
In the Device Manager, is there a device with a yellow mark or under USB is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click and Uninstall it. Pull the USB cable from the computer end. Make sure you have the adapter plugged in correctly. Usually the USB cable part of the adapter points away from the Power plug of the drive. For a 3.5" drive, you need to use the power adapter. 2.5" drives do not require this. If it is powered up and spinning (humming or vibration from drive) then plug in the USB cable to the Back USB port of the computer and not the front as they are weaker. A new Hardware Wizard should start. After it loads, go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management do you see your external drive?

The seller has good ratings, so even if it is a bad cable, he should help. I don't think it's bad though with what you have posted since.

What was this drive doing that you needed to pull it and try to get the data?

have you tried this yet? Your hard drive may be showing up here but be listed as Unallocated Space, which would mean the file system is broken and if there was data on it, it would be lost now. If this is a brand new drive, then it needs to be initialized, partitioned and formatted.

i have installed mini tool partion wizard and the drive does come up on this, well the ide one does and says it is damaged , is this the reason why it won"t show on my computer ? or why it won"t run but still powers to it ? also this does not explain the reason the sata facility won"t work or does not seem to power up , i have checked the the hard drive is getting power with the aid of a multi meter and is getting the required voltage on the correct pins ? but just not seems to even be seen when i re start the computer after uninstalling it etc and with a new hardware install etc ? bye the way thanks for the time !!!

If it's reporting that the drive is damaged, then it usually won't show.

I would suggest booting with a Ubuntu Live CD Download | Ubuntu and try to recover the data from there. I have found that Ubuntu (or any Linux version) can sometimes see drives that Windows can't. I would plug the drive in first to make this easier. When Ubuntu asks, tell it to run directly from the CD rather than installing it. Installing will wipe out your current Windows install.

Great. Just be sure that you select the run from cd option rather than the Install option when you boot from the Ubuntu disk. Don't want to overwrite your data.

You may want to try your HDD on another adapter, be sure your using the Power Adapter as well. If the adapter is bad, Windows may report the drive as damaged.
