Hey everyone. I'm new to this forum, but I love working on my pc and trying to figure things out on my own. I still have a lot to learn, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm a computer gamer and want to upgrade my mobo, cpu, and ram. Just want to make sure it will all work together and any tips on installation would be nice. Heres what I have in my system right now.. And i'll post the links to what I plan on purchasing.

bought this computer off newegg a few years back and have made small upgrades here and there but nothing major like mobo. anyway here it is.

Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Memory 4GB DDR2 800Hard Drive 320GB SATA Optical Drive 1 20X DL DVD+/-RW Drive Graphics EVGA Gtx 260 superclocked 896mbAudio ALC883 High Definition Audio CODEC Power Supply 600 Watt Stealth X Stream Power SupplyOperating System Windows Vista Home Premium Motherboard Name ASUS M2A-VM Mainboard CPU Type Athlon 64 X2 Installed Qty 1 CPU Speed 5200+ CPU Socket Type AM2 CPUMain Features 64 bit Dual Core Processor Ok now here is the mobo, the cpu, and the ram I want to put in.

mb - Newegg.com - ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard

cpu - Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX

ram - Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL

Will this work? I know its like im replacing the whole rig, but I dont want to lose what ive already put into it.

It really depends on when that is and what kind of price we're talking. I like this set because its under $400.

To support that CPU the motherboard needs to have PCB version 1.01G and BIOS 0605 according to the ASUS support site. Not sure how much newegg can tell you about the version of the board they sell.
One more thing.. will I have to reinstall Vista or is there a way I can avoid that?

When the Mobo is identical to the previous one you can usually get by without a reinstall. But when the Mobo is different it requires a fresh OS install.
A fresh install is always the better option.

Never ever is a pretty broad statement.
The RAM speed used is dependent on the Mobo.
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO
Memory Standard DDR3 1800(O.C.) / 1600 / 1333 / 1066
Many issues are seen with 4GB sticks and 4GB (2X2) is more than sufficient for any game and most apps.
