I have a XP home CD andI put it in to check to seeif my computer (Win 98 se) could upgrade to XP Home. The message I got basically said I cant do it from win 98? My friend works for the cable company and she had the same computer as me..win 98 se and it worked on here computer. I have 512 MB ram and a 933 processor, has anyone upgraded from win 98 with any luck? If I did upgrade would I loose all the current files & folders etc..(word doc, pics etc) I would back them all up but I am just curious how it works,,Thanks

In theory, your computer should upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP without any hitches. That is assuming that your hardware is XP compatiable...

If you want an excellent article on the background of Windows 98 -> XP, including a step-by-step guide with screenshots and post-installation tasks, visit this link.
Try booting from the CD. It should detect the Windows 98 install. I never uprgrade from within windows anyway. Just doesn't seem as stable.
Never ever ever upgrade.

Do yourself a favor and backup your data, and do a wipe and clean install.
