Check your power settings. Mine does too when running on batteries. If it is not in Power Settings of Windows, try the BIOS. If I remember right my Thinkpad has this in the BIOS settings where you can set brightness to high regardless on batts or AC... downside is battery drains fast.
Unplugging power cord
I own a dell 700m why is it when I unplug the power cord my screen goes a a little bit darker, is this builtin and not changable, this makes it really hard for watching movies on the plane
