I get an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error when I start the computer. I do not have the recovery disk, is there any way to reformat the computer without it?

Are you saying that you don't have a Win XP CD or does your machine use recovery software like the HP computers?
I have the xp reinstallation cd, and the drivers/utilities cd, but not the recovery cd. So I have no idea how to reformat the thing without the recovery cd.

If your XP CD is the same as the stand alone product that you can purchase in a store then you can do a fast repair.

Are you familiar with changing the boot sequence in the bios?

If so change to boot sequence to boot from CD_Rom first and boot up to the XP CD and follow the prompts on how to do a repair installation.
