Unmountable Boot Volume - Cannot run recovery!

Hi all,

I am experiencing a problem I hope you can solve.:sigh:

When I turn on my Toshiba Satellite A65 it comes up with a screen saying that windows did not start successfully and offers the options of "safe
mode", "safe mode with networking" and "Safe mode with command prompt" and "last know good configuration". it also counts down to autostart in normal mode.

However, whichever option you choose it then goes onto a blue screen
with the following message:

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
if this is the first time you have seen this error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. if
you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select startup options, and then select safe mode.

I have done some googling and found that the most common fix is to insert a windos xp disk and enter the recovery environment:

Windows XP Home Repair Guide

When I do that, the files for the recovery all load and a message appears for a few seconds at the bottom of the screen that says:

"Examining 57232 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi..."

Then the message changes to:

"Examining Startup Environment"

After a moment the cpmputer restarts and I am back to the "windows did not start successfully screen."

In other words, it never gets the the part where it asks me which volume I want to repair.

(by the way..I also tried to boot the computer from a BartPE disk that I have. It also get as far as loading and running the startup screen of the environment, but then kicks back to the "windows did not start successfully screen.")

Any Ideas?
