I have one question concerning hijackthis.
At least six times, now, I have encountered a computer running XP that
exhibits the following problem:
I start the computer in safe mode, since I KNOW the system has malware.
I install Hijackthis to it's own directory. i.e. C:\Utilities\Hjt
Hijackthis runs. I can scan. I can delete the stuff I know to be bad, but I
CANNOT save the log file. As soon as I click the Save Log button, Hijackthis
is gone. Immediately. It will restart and scan, but no success at saving the log.
The problem will eventually get resolved if I continue removing stuff with
Ewido, Cleanup, CCleaner, and the on-line virus scans, i.e Bitdefender,
eTrust, Freedomnet, so on and so forth. So I know that something malicious is
doing this.
What I was hoping for, was that I might get a hint so that I could resolve
this right away. I like to save the log file for the customer and then edit
the file by adding the reasons to it as to why these things are undesirable.
This helps the customer learn to keep their computer cleaner.
I just wondered if you might have encountered this yourself?
I do not seem to have any success Googleing this. I find all kind of pages
telling me how to save the log. I am not saying that I am a genius, but I
know how to save the log, if it is possible to do so.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using the "Do a system scan and Save a logfile" button, so it does it all in one operation?

If that fails, you may have in infection that targets HJT. If so, some entries are also hiding.

  • Navigate to C:\hjt\HijackThis.exe (or wherever HJT is located)
  • Right click on HijackThis.exe
  • Select 'Rename'
  • Type in <some random name>.exe
  • Press Enter.

Rename it, run a scan, and post a log here for examination.

Thank you very much.
That had not occurred to me.
Frankly I have never seen the "Do a system scan and Save a logfile" Button.
I will try the rename idea. I will also investigate the possibility that my version of HiJackThis needs replacing. I try to make sure that I have the latest.
Again thank you VERY MUCH.
