I am running Win XP and for no apparent reason, I am unable to open internet browsers. I have tried IE, Firefox, and Google Chrome. At best, they may open, but I cannot perform a search from that point.

I can ping various websites without problems or packet loss, and ipconfig looks fine.

Virus Scan (AVG) turns up nothing. Prior to this, I did have two virus programs running at once (computer tech problem) which was causing conflict, but once I uninstalled one of them, the problems went away.

I ran Windows Update and everything is up to date. I did install and run Malware Bytes and removed the 17 threats that were found. I also ran it again in safe mode which turned up nothing.

What can be causing this? Please help! Thanks!

When you say "Cannot open Browser" Does that mean when you click on a browser that the program doesn't open or does it mean it opens but doesn't connect to a web site?
I will assume the later. Go to Start/Run and type inetcpl.cpl and press enter/Connections tab/Lan Settings.Make sure all the boxes are Unchecked.
Now go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click the Local Area Connection. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP-IP)/Properties. Make sure Obtain an IP Address and DNS Sever Address Automatically are both checked.
Then go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc open the Hosts file with Notepad. Delete any lines after localhost
Save the file then go to Start/Run and type CMD. In the command prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. the IP address should change to Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew and press enter. You should have a new IP address, try it again

By not being able to open browser, I mean it will slowly load sometimes but most often not. OR it will go to the home page, and if I type anything into the address bar or search it will just try to load and nothing happens. This happens with IE, Firefox, and Chrome.

I will attempt the fixes you both suggested and report back my results. In your opinion do you think it has anything to do with malware? Otherwise I don't see shy the Network settings would need to be altered if nothing was changed and I can ping websites.
