Unable to find own wifi network in range

8366 Views 18 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  2xg
Hi, I've searched and searched for answers to the following but can't seem to figure out what is wrong with my computer. Hope someone can help please?

My laptop has stopped being able to see my wireless network even though it is in range. I have checked that there is nothing wrong with my router and it is working fine as two other computers can connect to the wi-fi. I have tried releasing and renewing, I checked the device manager and at one stage there was a yellow exclamation mark (code 39) next to the intel pro/1000 network connection device but when I've gone and checked it again, it's gone.

I can only connect to the internet via wi-fi as the lan cable stopped being recognised so to check devices etc, I can't use a lan cable, hence why wi-fi's important.

Is someone able to help please?

Thank you

First off, let's reset the stack since wired or wireless isn't working on that machine.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Next, I'd like to see this.

Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Finally, please post this as well.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thanks.

I've reset the tcp/ip and winsock and then rebooted the computer.

I've downloaded xirrus wifi inspector software on my usb and tried installing it on my problem laptop but as you wrote it was missing .net framework. I've downloaded that file too from my other computer and tried installing it on the problem laptop but it's having troubles with the setup. It tried for five attempts to start the install but tried connecting to the server and failed.

Exact phrase where it has problems installing is 're-establishing connection with the server' (attempt x of 5). Does installation of net framework software require internet connection?
Try this link, it's the full package and won't require an Internet connection. NET Framework 3.5 full package
Here's the screen shot of xirrus and the cmd text, I couldn't find the ip address, default gateway address or DNS info from the ipconfig /all command.

Is your wireless network either of the ones displayed on the diagnostic screen?

Let's reset the stack here.

After the reset, try the wired connection again.

No my wireless is not one of the networks visible in the attachment. I've reset the tcp/ip and winsock and rebooted twice now but still my wireless is not visible nor any connection is being made automatically.
I've checked in the device manager and selected show hidden devices. There is a yellow exclamation mark against intel pro/1000 pl network connection - code 39 and also against serial - code 24 under the non plug and play drivers.
Let's see that in a screenshot.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

I've taken screenshots of the network adapter section with the yellow exclamation mark on intel pro/1000 pl network connection, and shots of the non plug and play section with the yellow mark on 'serial' plus have taken a shot of the ports which I'll attach to the next reply.

Well, the wired NIC has a problem, but the wireless looks OK.

Since you can display other wireless networks, are you SURE your router is working. Have you tested it with another wireless machine?
do you have your ssid turned off. If you do, you will not see it in the list. try setting up a connection and type in the ssid and see if it connects that way.
Thanks for the help so far. Yes I'm definite the router is working as I'm using my itouch and work computer on the wireless network. I checked and the ssid is not turned off. I recreated the network manually and it didn't pick up. I changed the 801.band? from 11 to 1 just in case it was having a problem with other wireless around but still no connection. Should I rebuild the computer?
Hello,

See if uninstalling/reinstalling your Wireless Network Adapter helps:
Click on Start, right click My Computer => Properties => Hardware tab => Device Manager => find your Network Adapters and expand it. Right click on the Wireless Adapter and choose Uninstall. To reinstall, right click anywhere on any Device, then choose Scan for hardware changes. Normally your Windows will do a Plug N play auto install for you, but just in case you might have your CD driver ready.
Thanks for the help. I've been away so taken some time to get back to fixing this. I've uninstalled and reinstalled new devices for both the intel pro/1000 pl network connection and the wireless pro 3945abg net adapter.

Finally, the wireless adapter started working again and I can connect to it but the connection to the internet didn't work so I then used the netsh int ip reset reset.log and netsh winsock etc commands and restarted the computer. I was then able to connect to the internet with no problems.

At first there appeared to be a conflict of ip addresses with my itouch that was on the same network so I used the netsh int and netsh winsock commands again, rebooted and since then both appear ok. That is after I also renewed the ip address for the itouch.

Before, I mentioned that the lan connection device wasn't working, after uninstalling and reinstalling this device it now appears but has the yellow exclamation mark noting that it has limited or no connectivity. I've checked and it has an unique ip address but the physical address is reading as all zeros and there is no other data appearing other than the standard subnet mask 255.255.0.0.

Any suggestions on how I can get this working? Thanks

It seems to be more like an IP Conflict. Try assigning a Static IP to your Ipod Touch, pickup an IP that's not being used in your Network. You may download and use this Tool to find out what IP's are being used and not used in your wireless network.
I downloaded the tool and there are there is 1 ip address that is alive, that is my computer working with the wireless connection.

I've checked the ipod touch and the ip address being used does not actually show up on the ip scanner even though the itouch is connecting wireless through this network and is ok. It doesn't appear to be conflicting with any other computers.

I've allocated a static ip address to the lan connection that is not working and it is now saying it's connected and the ip address shows up in the ip scanner but there is no connection to the actual internet. The only numbers there are the ip address and the subnet mask, no numbers are present for default gateway, dns servers etc. When I run the ip scanner again the static ip address shows up but the difference I can see is that there is no physical address or MAC address assigned. I don't really know what the physical address is about so I'm now confused as to what I should do next.

I've deleted the static ip address to check again and clicked on renewing ip address but it allocates an odd ip address like 169.254.0.0 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0. That's when I get the limited or no connectivity again.

How do I get the lan connection to find a unique physical address?

Please try these:

Disable your Network Adapter from Device Manager, give it 30 sec. then enable it back.

================
1. Save all your current work, close all open applications, then shut down your computer. Wait for a minute.
2. First, turn your Router off and wait for a couple of minutes.
3. Turn off your modem.
4. Disconnect all the ethernet cables that are connected to the router and modem and the PC.
5. Reconnect them and ensure that there are no loose connections in between them.
6. Now, switch on your PC and let it boot.
7. Switch on the modem first and after it gets initialized, switch on the router.

Please give us an update.
