Unable to find cause of IE 7 Popunder

I have been searching for the cause of this for months. Although I normally use Firefox for all my activities, occasionally I have to use IE for some tasks. This problem seems to be confined to only IE(IE 7).

When ever I open IE 7 or after I start searching with IE, I start getting pop-undrs(new window.

I system is Vista Home Premium. I have disabled the Windows Defender(because of the problems it causes. But, I use the Windows Firewall.

I have Kapersky AntiVirus 7.0 installed. I have run numerous scans with SpyBot and Ad Aware(both are the latest versions). But I still have not found the cause of these pop-unders.

I tried running the Panda online scan, but it hung 1/3 of the way thru the scan. I did run the BitDefender scan and I have that log if needed.

If you still require our assistance, please do the following:

Uninstall your existing HijackThis as it is the Beta version.

Please download HijackThis to your desktop.

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Install" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you--please close it.

Run a new scan with dss.exe and copy/paste the entire contents of the main.txt in your next reply.

Also, I highly recommend you re-enable the User Acct Controls. While it may seem a nuisance, right now, it's all that's protecting you from the nastier rootkits you see hitting XP users.

I do see you have Kaspersky installed, but I'd still like to use them for an online scan and see what turns up:

Using Internet Explorer, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  - Extended
- Scan Options:
  - Scan Archives
    [*]Scan Mail Bases
Click OK & have it scan My Computer
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

I tried the kapersky online scan, but gave up after the 7th failure. The definitions database download "failed" each time at 93%. The error message given was that I wasn't connected to the internet(which I was obviously).

The pop unders are still trying to load. but I have added the two culprits to the "block" list so they are being blocked. the two networks are:

http://view.atdmt.com
http://ad.adtegrity.net

So, deleting the Nero file did not solve the problem. But, at least I have them blocked now. But, it still makes pages load slowly.

It seems to be random. Not associated with destination, but the browser(IE 7). I have finally been able to isolate five ad networks and blocked them. They are:

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Install AVG Anti Spyware

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
On the main Status screen, under Your Computer's Security, click Resident Shield
Click the word active to change it to inactive
On the top of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
- Select "Do Not Automatically generate report after every scan"

When you have finished updating, run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions

...it's important that all windows must be closed)

Click Scanner
Click on the Scan tab
Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Please post the results here.

I'm not seeing any signs of active infection here, but I do see you had WinFixer in the past. As a precaution, I'd like you to run this next tool:

Please download and save VundoFix to your desktop.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to your forum thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
