I have a custom dictionary, Scientific Papers.dic, to which I was able to add words yesterday, but after rebooting and restarting Word, when I try to add a word I get "The macro cannot be found or has been disabled because of your Macro security settings."

My macro security setting allows all macros to run, and they run fine, so I'm thinking the message must be wrong. I've located my custom dictionary file in a directory that holds several other custom dictionary .dic files (under 10 of them), along with a CUSTOM.DIC with some old words that must have been created a while ago.

So in addition to the error problem, I'm wondering what the difference is between CUSTOM.DIC and my own custom dictionaries, some of which were last modified after CUSTOM.DIC and some before.

The problem might be what you've selected as the default dictionary.

Thanks for the reply, Corday. The dictionary I'm trying to add to was the default one, all right. I tried designating another dictionary as the default, and also created a new dictionary, but trying to save a word to either one got the same error message.

I also created a new document and tried to save one of its words, but same response. I opened another document I'd been able to save words from before, but same response.

To add or delete a word, you must open that particular dictionary.

Thanks, Corday. Not sure what you mean by opening the dictionary. I can add/delete words from the dictionary by opening the .dic file and manually typing in/deleting words from it, but I was hoping to be able to simply select the word in the document, right-click, and select Add to Custom Dictionary, the way I used to be able to.

Anyway, I think I've found a workaround that at least works for me. I had created a new custom dictionary in an attempt to fix the problem, so I changed my default dictionary to the new one, and just manually copy/pasted the contents of Scientific Papers.dic into the new one. Now, in the document, I can right-click a word and choose Add to Dictionary (not Add to Custom Dictionary), and the word is added to the default dictionary.

OK, we're on the same page. I was trying to say that when you work on a file it seeks the default dictionary.
