I am able to access any site on the Internet except the secured sites (banking sites, credit cards, etc). In this example, I have tried to access the Bank of America website. I am using Google Chrome and IE 8 and the message that I get is:

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at https://www.bankofamerica.com/index.jsp might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

This message is what I get from all of the secured sites. It seems that its any site that begins with "https://".

I've tried running the Malware Bytes, Spybot S&D, etc and they found some, which I removed or fixed. Still no luck. I also did the "regsvr dll" changes that I found from the previous "Unable to Access Secured Sites" and still no luck. I've checked my Internet Options and also followed the steps to "fix" the problem (from another message board). Again, no luck. I've even tried restoring the point to a time when I last used a secured site. Again, no luck.

I'm desparate and was wondering if there is anyone that may be able to help me so that I can regain access to the secured sites. Please help!

Have you ever been able to access secure sites ? If so, did something happen just before it stopped working ? New router ? New hardware ? New software ?

Do you have a router ?

Have you tried resetting Internet Explorer back to factory default ?

Umm, check your Services. Maybe the malware disabled something necessary to run encrypted stuff. Are you currently using Selective Startup (msconfig) ?

Check to see if you can get Windows Updates. 99% of the time if you cannot get the updates your system is most likely infected. What are the security program(s) installed on the system?

Thank you for your suggestions. To answer, I have been able to access the secured sites in the past. The last time was back on 6/30/10, when I did some online banking. I have not installed any new hardware for awhile. However, in the past few weeks after the last time I had access to the secured sites, I thought my PC was running really slow. I have been reading a book, "Speed It Up!" by Michael Miller and in it he suggests downloading software to sweep the files in PC for malware and viruses (ie. PC decrapifier - to delete bundleware programs and Windows Defender).

I have also dowloaded a program called Advanced System Care (free from download.com) and Ad-Aware. I've also used Malware Bytes, as well. I've swept in Safe Mode and regular mode. I have since removed Windows Defender, since I read somewhere that it sometimes causes conflicts with other Spyware programs.

I also have StopZilla running. I have used this program for a long time and its never caused any problems before.

It was after all of this, that I noticed that I could no longer access the secured sites.

I have also tried resetting IE to factory defaults, too. No luck. I do use Selective Startup when booting. How would I know if the malware disabled something necessary to run encrypted stuff.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I've tried to get Windows Updates from the links you provided and my PC said it was unable to connect. Do you think I have a virus or somekind of malware that is stopping me from accessing the secured sites? Do you think, it is simply just buying a anitvirus program and it will correct the problem?

The only security program I have running is StopZilla.

I am really stuck........

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried updating the regsvr32 as you suggested in the DOS box, yesterday. Unfortunately, the problem still exists.

You've been afflicted by a common condition, the idea that "more is better" with regard to AV/AS programs. Instinctively people understand that malware slows down their system, what they do not understand is that the quality of malware that slows a system down is the exact same quality that the magic cure-all software has; they both hog system resources and slow your system down.

You need a fully-updated WinXP and exactly one AV software. That's it, no more. The next stop on the OCD Express is installing Registry Cleaners, which are the worst of all. I suggest you spend some time contemplating the idea that the more **** you have installed on your computer 1) the slower your computer is going to run and 2) the more potential problems will exist for "something" to go wrong. Less is more, simple is better, and when in doubt, leave it out. If you cannot haul it, uninstall it. Etc.... (I graduated from the Johnny Cochran School of Computer Repair...)

And another thing. Windows Defender is written by Microsoft, which also wrote XP. If there are conflicts between WinDefender and other AS softwares, consider who the real problem is. MS is has standards for the code that runs on their O/S, and if anyone is not playing by the rules, it's NOT Windows Defender. Meaning, if there are conflicts between WinDefender and "something else", it's the SOMETHING ELSE that needs to go. This also shows what can happen when you blindly take the advice of people on-line. There are a lot of people that have a lot of weird beliefs, such as those that advocate the use of Registry Cleaners. Frequently it's not WHAT is being suggested that you need to pay attention to, but WHO is suggesting it.

Dial-a-Fix has a bunch of tools that can repair various parts of Windows XP. It re-registers .dll's (like prophet suggested), as well as several others. All of the tools on Dial-a-Fix are safe and will not harm your system. I'd suggest trying any of them that seem likely to help.

Have you checked your Services under "Administrative Tools" to see if there is anything disabled/not running that should be running ?

I think the system is infected. We do not deal with virus infections in this area of the forum.

Read the instructions HERE and post the requested logs HERE.
If you still need assistance after working with the security team then please post back and we will gladly try to help but for now we can no longer assist.
