I had a tech in today to replace my hard drive and motherboard. He asked me if I always turn off the electricity to my surg protector when I turn off my computer and I said yes.

He stated that turning off the electricity damages the computer, even if the computer is turned all the way off.

Is this true?

On the news they say to turn off the surg protector to save on electricity; however, there is a light on inside the computer when it's turned off but not unplugged.

Turning off the electricity after the PC is shutdown should have no ill effect on the PC.

The LED on the motherboard being on when powered down is normal.

Not sure your actually saving much electricity by turning off the surge protector.

I have to agree with my partner here, turning off the electricity cannot hurt a computer but there really is no reason to as I can't believe the savings would amount to anything meaningful.

If the surge protector is turned off the Mobo shouldn't be receiving any power and the Mobo LED should not be illuminated.
