Hi,

I have just noticed that on the AMD sticker on my laptop it says Turion 64. I did a check and it seems that this processor is what it is and can run 64 bit Vista.

Now, my processor runs amazingly with the slightest provocation, games with minimal 3d graphics, watching videos etc. If I upgraded to Windows 7 RC 64 bit, would that have, if any, a positive or negative impact on how hot the processor gets?

I can't find the answer to that question anywhere on the net, and I hope you can help out. I'm trying out the Windows 7 RC 32 bit at the moment (because it came with Vista 32 I thought this was the correct version to download). Is there an appreciable difference when using a 64 bit OS?

My Laptop -
HP Dv7
Turion X2 Dual Core, RM-72, 2100Mhz
3 Gigs Ram

Many thanks in advance

There will be no effect on the temp of the CPU, The biggest advantage at this time to 64Bit is the ability to use more then 4gig of ram on a laptop that would not be an advantage. If you do move to 64 bit make sure there are 64 bit drivers available for any printers, scanners, usb devices you may use.

Hi, just one more related question reagrding laptops and 64 -

I gather that it is the motherboard that determines how much memory can be used in a computer. Would that be correct? If it turns out my motherboard cannot go higher than 4gigs (its using 3 at the moment) it sounds like it is not worth upgrading. However if I did and added an extra 1gig of ram so

Win 7 RC 64 bit, 4Gb Ram
vs
Win 7 RC 32, 3Gb Ram (current)

Would you say that xtra gig used would be worth it?

It would depend on what you use it for usually with a laptop no you would not see a lot of difference, if you were using xp the answer would be a definite no you don't need it, for Vista you get a maybe, for Win 7 a I don't know yet although it appears to less memory intense then Vista but needs more then XP.

On a laptop as opposed to a desk top power usage is usually a key feature the manufactures try to keep usage as low as possible sacrificing performance for time unplugged the more ram you're powering the less time unplugged while 1 stick is probably not noticeable difference it all adds up.

I would probably just stay with the 3 gig unless I saw memory usage over that amount usually in either a video rendering program or photo editing.
