Many many many many moons agao I used to visit LinuxNewbie.org before they were bought out by internet.com. They used to have some good articles, but I haven't been there in a long time. I couldn't tell you the status of them now.
Generic Linux books never seemed to have done me any good since they are written to a specific distribution.. like redhat/mandrake/slack/bsd ect.. I have a PDF version of a solaris book I bought up on the web if anyone wants that.. it seemed the most generic meaning the commands and such were cross platform for the most part. Otherwise .. I'd stick to specific packages you want to learn about like Samba or Apache or programs like Sed and Awk.. you can check out www.g33kb4r.com login as guest and he has a bookshelf setup for some common Unix/Linux stuff
