I'm helping my friend out with his network, and connecting to it via ethernet. Not able to get a connection. Here's the facts.

-His ethernet cable delivers internet to his other very similar computer, in the same location.
-When I brought the problematic one to my house, my ethernet cable worked just fine.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with either updating drivers, or some kind of IP conflict when I plug in the one causing the issue, but for some reason, it senses the network but still doesn't work. (Limited connectivity, etc).

I tried:
-Restarting, obviously.
-Downloading drivers from the support site (Gateway; its an "Emachines W3644")
-Releasing and renewing via ipconfig, and the "Repair" option (its Windows XP)

This PC was recently restored to factory settings but I had to install network and all other drivers myself.

Somehow stumped.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that his motherboard might have an updated network driver that isn't available on the support site? I don't even know if that can cause such a problem, where it works in one place and not in another..

Ok if the computer worked at your house, then the Network Adapter is fine. On the problematic network; are you going through a router or are you using the same Ethernet Cable of the other computer? Have you tried using the same cable, if not? Try switching the cable. On that computer, go to Start/Run and type CMD and press enter. in the Command Prompt type ipconfig /release and press Enter. The IP address will change to 0.0.0.0. Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew and press enter. You should have a new IP address (ex) 192.168.x.x. Now try a web page.

It's always the same cable. Works on one computer, is giving me limited connectivity on the other. I've tried changing the IP address via the above method multiple times without any success :(
