I have two computers, one running XP SP3 and one that I just upgraded from XP SPS3 to Windows 7. I have a crossover cable that worked fine when both were XP. Now I can't access either machine from the other except through 'ping'.

I set up the unique IP addresses and same subnet mask and can ping from the Windows 7 machine to the XP machine successfully - 0% loss. When pinging from the XP machine to the Windows 7 machine, I can see that the WIndows 7 machine is receiving the packets, but it doesn't respond back to the XP machine. The XP machine reports 100% loss.

I just want to be able to share files between the machines over Ethernet. Can someone please help?

Thanks,
Kerry

Configure the machines as follows.

PC #1:
IP address: 192.168.9.1
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

PC #2:
IP address: 192.168.9.2
Subnet Address: 255.255.255.0

Leave the Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses blank.

Make sure any firewalls are configured to put the 192.168.9.x subnet in the trusted zone.

Finally, you'll have to enable fine/print sharing on the machines and actually share one or more folders or drives.

Here's a page that describes the process in detail: http://www.howtodothings.com/computers-internet/how-to-connect-2-pcs-directly

I followed your instructions and I can 'see' the two computers (ASTRO2 and ASTRO3) now and the shared drives including folders on each, but neither willl let me open a folder or copy a folder or files to the other. From XP I get the message:

"\\Astro2\f\Folder is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions:

Access is denied"

Going the other way from Windows 7 I get:

"Windows cannot access \\ASTRO3"

I have checked permissions on Windows 7 and 'Everyone" has full control.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : FIXANON.REG
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be FIXANON.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result.

------------------- Use ONLY the text after this line in the FIXANON.REG file -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use ONLY the text before this line in the FIXANON.REG file-----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Reboot the computer.

John,

I tried the script on the Windows 7 PC (Astro2) and it added the key successfully to the registry. However, when I go to Network and click on the XP PC (Astro3), I still get the message "Windows cannot access \\ASTRO3". It also gives me an error code "Error code:0x80070035 The network path was not found".

Apparently Windows 7 sees this crossover network as "Unidentified network" and identifies it as a public network.

The XP machine (Astro3) can read, open, write the files on the Windows 7 machine just fine.
