Trouble transferring files- XP to Vista

I have a new computer with Vista, and my old one is XP, and I need to transfer files. I have a cable that fits into each computer in the socket used by the internet connection. I cannot make the new Vista open up to show me the files on my old XP, so I can drag them over. What proceedure should I be using for each computer?
