Hi and thanks in advance for any and all help received. I would also, in all fairness, wish to inform anyone concerned that you are currently reading the words of quite possibly the most computer illiterate human being in the free world. Having said that, I will attempt to explain my problem.
My computer has been becoming increasingly slower over the last several months. I have been dealing with/ignoring this problem until the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back began appearing on the computer screen yesterday. I am receiving this official looking warning on my computer that keeps popping up constantly with every action I attempt. The warning says:
SYSTEM ERROR
Your computer was infected by unknown trojan
It's dangerous for your system! ( critical files can be lost !)
Click to download the antispyware program to clean your system (recommended)

From what Ive read on your site and others, I am assuming this is an attempt to get me to download even more trouble than what I am currently experiencing. I almost goofed up and downloaded it when it first popped up. In fact I clicked on the ok button but thankfully was warned that it was an unrecognized site and didnt have a valid signature or something to that effect (see, I told you I was computer illiterate) and I cancelled the attempt to download.

I followed all the other steps in your instructions. I had already downloaded the Windows Service Pack 2 a long time ago so I dont know if that is a problem as your instructions said I should not download it until my system has been cleaned. Thanks again for any and all help you can give me before this thing drives me insane and I take the computer outside and shoot it...........Tony

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Post that log in your next reply.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Hi and thanks for your reply. Before attempting the instructions you gave, I need to inform you of my darling wife's actions. Even though I told her not to attempt to fix our problem, as that could possibly do more damage than good she proceeded to attempt it anyway while I wasnt home. As I told you in my original post, I am a computer illiterate. My wife is as well. The difference between she and I have accepted that fact. She downloaded something called Spyware Doctor and ran a scan which apparently was very thorough as it took over 3 hours to complete. It found the Virtumonde trojan as well as several others she cant remember the name of. It took care of those apparently or so it said. It didnt show the malware from File-Secure.com in the list. It did however start blocking its attempt to give that annoying false trojan warning popup that appeared 4 or 5 times with every move made. A Spyware Doctor message popped up on the screen and said it was blocking the false trojan warning and mentioned something to the effect that it was somehow connected to or coming to us by way of C:\WINDOWS\TOPRATES.DLL. She then used "search" in the startup menu for that named file and found it. She said it said showed to be related to a Kodak Software update she had gotten. She said that she noticed that Kodak was misspelled as Kodack in whatever it was she had found. She deleted the file and neither the false trojan popup or spyware doctor's message that it was blocking it has reappeared. So, in a way, I guess she may have taken care of that problem or perhaps created even more problems as our computer is even slower than before. I use RoadRunner DSL and its taking over a minute just to load a search engine. Its driving us both nuts. Dialup was never this slow! Im sorry I cant be more informative as to what she did or found but she told me all she could remember, all the while using such technical words as "some file thingy". I totally apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Should I repeat the 5 step process again and send you the reports before we proceed? If not I have a couple of questions before I download the SDFix and proceed with your instructions. Please, if you will, ( and I know dealing with computer idiots like me must be a pain) explain how to do each step (including what and where to click) of your instructions as I know little more than how to use a search engine and how to check my email.
How do I download the SDFix to my decktop? When I clicked on your hyperlink for it, it gave the option to download it to C drive only.If I have to download it to C drive first, how do I find it after downloading and get it to my desktop?
I undertand the part about how to get it into safe mode, I think.
When you say "open the extracted SDFix folder" does that mean to click on the desktop icon ( the one I dont know how to create) or something that pops up on the screen or what?
I think I follow the next few instructions or at least I hope so.
You say the report will be copied to "Clipboard" ready for posting. I know this will either make you laugh , scream, or abandon this cause completely, but I dont know what that is, where that is, or how to use it.
I have my wifes promise that she will not attempt any more "fixes" if youll please just give us one more chance.
Forever in your debt,
Tony

Hi -

First.....Breathe. Relax.

These instructions are all written for people with little or no computer savvy, so if you take your time, and read them all carefully again, you should be able to perform the tasks.

I'll try to help clarify.

toprates.dll is exactly why I wanted you to run SDFix. It's malware, and the cause of your popups.

Windows Clipboard:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial95.html

All this means is that the information in SDFix log will be ready for you to paste into this reply, just as you did with DSS log. Open a reply window, and paste it in.

As far as downloading SDFix goes, when you click on the link, you should be given the option to Run or Save. You've tried to correctly choose Save.

Using Internet Explorer, it looks like this:

Then, you should be presented with a "Save to" dialog box, which looks like this:

Click on Desktop on the left side, then click on Save.

SDFix.exe should now be on your desktop. We only use Desktop because it's easy to find. Using Windows Explorer, or via My Computer, you could navigate to C:\SDFix.exe and run it if that's the only place you can save it to.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Safe Mode instructions if you need them:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html

When you say "open the extracted SDFix folder" does that mean to click on the desktop icon ( the one I dont know how to create) or something that pops up on the screen or what?
Looking above at the bold, it means by using Windows Explorer, or via My Computer, navigate to C:\SDFix and open the folder by double clicking on it. Then double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.

Good job.

Not every slow machine is due to an infection. We'll take it one step at a time.

I also need a HijackThis log now.

Good morning,
I turned my computer on this morning and while initial startup was still quite slow, once everything got loaded, I did experience a noticable increase in speed navigating. It is not anywhere near 100% it was still a significant improvement over what it was......Youre The Man !!!

Ok, let's continue. Again, if you have any questions, ask before proceeeding.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P2P - I see you have P2P software (Limewire ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 u3 and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

In your case, it is these:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked

      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Use this pictorial guide to help you:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112/online-scanner-169242.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi-
The Scan finished before I got your reply with McAfee still turned on. I hope the report about objects being "locked" and "skipped" was not the result of the McAfee being left on. If so I'll be happy to run it again with all virus and spyware programs completely turned off. I deleted Limewire. Better safe than sorry. Here is the Kaspersky report. I'll wait to hear if its ok or if it needs to be re-scanned before I do the HJT report..............Thanks

These files are shown to be infected:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Samantha Murdock\Shared\Eighties classic.wma"
"C:\Documents and Settings\Samantha Murdock\Shared\Top of Charts - 2003 (slimshady).wma"

Please locate them using Windows Explorer, or Windows search, and delete them.

Let me know if you have any trouble with this step, and tell me how the machine is behaving.

A machine with your system's specs should not be behaving that poorly. But, like all machines, computers need regular maintenance to keep them operating smoothly. This means cleaning temp files, uninstalling unnecessary programs, limiting startup applications to those required by the Operating System, running a defrag of the machine once a month.

To me, it seems as though we've taken care of the malware which was present.

Have a look here for how to address a slow machine:

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

McAfee and Spyware Doctor installed together have caused performance issues on some other machines I've worked on. Uninstalling Spyware Doctor may be a good test to see if your system performance improves.

Let me know.

If any of this gets beyond your capabilities, you may need to take the machine to a reputable local technician. There's no substitute for hands on access.

Hi again,
I took your advice and deleted the spyware doctor with no noticable change. I deleted a few programs that I rarely if ever used. I also ran a disc cleanup and defrag. I dumped all the temp files, browsing history and cookies. My machine is a little faster than it was but nowhere near 100%. I also deleted all the different tools you had me install in diagnosing and eliminating all the bugs I had. The only one I couldnt get to delete was the download from Kaspersky's online scanner. Every time i tried to delete it it gave me a message after a minute or so that said that I needed to close microsoft Internet Explorer and try again? Illiterate me had no clue that it was running. I wasnt doing anything elso and had no windows open at all anywhere. Where can I turn that off long enough to delete the Kaspersky file? I figured every little bit I get rid of helps. Also in that link you provided addressing a slow machine, there was mention of StartUpLite1.07 Are you familiar with this and do you think i should download and install it? It supposedly removes or turns off any unneccessary programs or startup applications. If this isnt a good choice can you tell from all those reports i sent in what I could turn off or remove via the control panel that may help? .
Perhaps as you suggested it is a hardware issue. When this computer was 6 months old, the hard drive crashed for some unknown reason. at 1 year old, it did it again. At 2 years old it crashed a third time. Luckily I had 4 year in-house warranty coverage. For about a month prior to each crash , the computer became increasingly slower. I contacted dell (groan) each time when it began to slow down and they pretty much blew it off as either I had a virus or malware issue or I was doing somthing wrong to cause it to slow.Only when it actually failed did they send out a tech. Im wondering if it's on the verge of taking a powder on me again. I'm gonna give them a call later this evening (groan again) and see if they give me the good ol' runaround again. Live and learn.... I was wondering if you could suggest a good choice for Virus protection, spyware protection, firewall, malware protection etc? Obviously, or at least it appears to me, with all the infections you found ,McAfee isnt quite taking care of things.
Thanks again for all your help and advice.............Tony

With your machine's history, I wouldn't be surprised if something is going wonky again. For so many hdd to fail would have me looking at other hardware, such as Power Supply or motherboard.

A far as uninstalling Kaspersky online scanner goes, I've never had a problem with it. Close all browser windows, uninstall from Add/Remove programs. If it still gives you fits, try uninstalling in safe mode.

For other protection options, see this thread:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f174/pc-safety-and-security-what-do-i-need-115548.html

I like Eset's NOD32 and Kaspersky for AV protection if paying, AntiVir if not.

More info here:

I've used RubbeRDuckY's StartUpLite. It's both safe and effective, or we wouldn't suggest it's use.
