Toshiba Satellite is overheating

...and it is making me a little hot under the collar as well. It is the Satellite L305D with an amd processor. It was really hot under the cpu area and then shut off. It wouldn't start by the power button but about 2 hours later, when it was cool, it worked again. The warranty was up in March. Is there anything I can do? Should I check something?

Hi check the air vents and fan for dust and debris a can of compressed air from the local computer shop, will blow it out but be carefull around the fan use a straw or similar to prevent it turning whilst cleaning, also remove all power including the battery prior to cleaning and follow the instructions on the can
