Hello, I'm trying to fix a problem with a laptop i have. It doesn't seem to start up pass the Window Vista Logo. A year ago it was having some virus problems so my sister sent it in for repair, a week later they said they couldn't fix the problem cause something was was missing or wrong with the laptop. I honestly have a feeling they took something out of the laptop like a piece that was needed and made a lie saying it couldn't work anymore, but besides the case, I just tried to see what was wrong and it doesn't work pass the Windows Vista Logo. Also on start up after it loads pass the F2 and F12 key configurations, it goes to a Windows System Error, saying to repair i have to load the disc the cd came with but sadly i lost it, i tried other disk like windows 7 or windows vista but they don't work on startup, even when i press the F12 key. Near The Windows Logo it tries to load for a second then it quickly turns to a blue screen with words and then resets, it pretty much does a loop until i turn it off. From what i can tell everything seems to work fine. I pressed the F2 button to look for the main lines and what seems to be missing is a Optical Hard Drive but i can't seem to tell if that's the actual Problem. What seems to be installed is the cd/DVD drive, the main hard drive, The ram chip sets, battery. Only thing i don't have is some part tats located near the USB ports, I opened it and nothing is there/connected. I just wanna make sure it's not a hard rive problem and just something else, cause whatever part is missing i wanna know what it is so i can buy a new one since this laptop seems to be very functional except for this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

if you want to test the hard drive, find out what make it is (laptop drives are easily removable to read the manufacturer's sticker on it), then download from the appropriate link at top of this page: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

You need to download the DOS version which includes an ISO file from which you can create a bootable CD. Then boot your laptop from that CD (go into the BIOS Setup & change first boot device to CD drive).

Start the PC and repeatedly tap F8

Once at the Advanced Options Menu choose Disable Auto Restart on System Failure

Hopefully this will allow you to get the BSOD error.

I agree with pip22 you should definitely test the hard drive with the manufacturer diagnostics.

How much RAM is installed? Have you tried starting with just one module installed?
