hi,
i have a fujitsu lifebook s series running xp. this will be typed in lower case for obvious reasons. my computer was behaving normally, then suddenly i could not capitalize anything, except with cap lock. i turned off my computer and restarted but the problem came back. i rebooted again, and then it was normally for several minutes and then starting misbehaving again. i looked at 'sticky keys' just an idea, but no luck. it's true in msword and the internet. this is what happens...

with the right shift key i get; 0l[6' but in word it tries to spellcheck whenever i right shift.

with the left shift key i get; gvyrf on the line above where i am typing and a green ugly volume bar flashes across the bottom part of my screen suddenly

it's a big problem because i cannot even do an 'at' for an email address in any way.

i'd really appreciate some help 'exclamation point'
michelle

no it happens regardless of the program. those were the 2 programs i tried first. but it happens in notepad, also just when i have the calculator up on the screen, except it says something different when i press shift. eventually, last night, the backspace also got corrupted and made empty square symbols, but i restarted and it is working again.

i called fujitsu. they had me press numluck with no help. then had me go back to a system restore point before the problem happened with no help. and then told me i had a virus and to scan my system for viruses but no viruses were found by mcaffee.

then they said they couldn't tell if it was the keyboard or motherboard but said that linking an external keyboard would not help because 'the keyboard is embedded in the motherboard.' my father offered to replace my laptop keyboard for me if i could tell for sure that it was the keyboard...

You need to check this info if it is embedded or not. So far all the ones I saw uses a flat cable to connect itself to the motherboard. Btw, how is this being 'embedded' thing stop/prevent you from using an external keyboard (i.e. via USB or PS/2)?

It won't prevent me from using an external keyboard. It's just that if the external keyboard works, it won't help me tell if it's the motherboard or the keyboard (per tech support person). I'll likely try it anyway before spending $230 for them to look at it.

Thanks for your help though. I'll try the antivirus software and may call them back to find out what they mean by "embedded."
