Ok, as per link/thread below, this a request for help on a Toshiba PX1267E-1G32 External HD that I cannot get to work anymore.

first issue was getting a USB message stating that if you plugged into a 2.0 port for faster access, then I got your USB device is not working. I have checked the forums on toshiba and I feel the worst.

I have also tried using another external case- but this doesn't pick up the drive in my computer etc except it can be see is disc management but without a drive letter and also states that there's not data on there only free space.

I have tried putting in side the pc with the same result. I would like to try a recovery programme like the one describe in link test drive? Any advice would be great before I proceed.
Oh this drive had secure password inbuilt that I did turn of but I believe it's a portion on the drive??

I have read so many sites, forums that unsure what to do next help please!:ermm:

In Disk Management, you can first try to assign a drive letter. If that fails then use Test Disk . If you have problems with Test Disk try GetDataBack NTFS. You will need another drive of the same size to restore your files to.

Reading the instructions on test disc with the thread talking you step by step (provided link in original post). There is one step that states "was partition done under vista?
Well I think my was XP as years ago I brought the drive and was using it on that system but had been in recent years using on Vista. I guess I have to answer this as a No and assume that it was all created under XP? Am I right to choose this option?

Right update.
Ran the test disc as per instructions but when searching for partitions couldn't find any so doing a deeper search now. If this cannot find any what is my next step? Heart in mouth time!

Update . Last post somehow never appeared!

Ran test disc and it never came back with anything, so now running a deeper search. If this shows nothing do I continue or skip and try the photo recovery that comes with it. Disc is mainly used for picture backups! Heart in mouth time!:cry:

if you have a problem.....then run GetDataBack NTFS which is very easy to use, but is not free to recover your files.
You will need another drive of the same size or larger to restore your files to.

Testdisk

Please make your own thread.

With Testdisk, I believe you are able to specify the recovery location. So in your case it wouldn't be C:\whatever, but \\NAS-name\location

ok sorry about that - but its was all related to the same issue - i.e. Hard drive failure and how to reslove that issue. For you records i have managed to run the PhotoRec from the NAS as you cannot pick up any Network Maps drives.
I still have 8 hours left and its been running all night so fingers crossed.
SF many thanks again for you help - the issue is still not resloved as i still do not know if the files would be readable etc, but as instructed i will raise a new Thread if i have issues with that. Thanks again -will update this thread with results though.

Thanks :) hope thats the correct way on the forum?

You do not have to start another thread as it will be a continuation of this same problem.
If the files are corrupted, and unreadable, you will have to chock it up to experience and be sure to backup in the future. There is nothing else to do accept to send the drive off to the very, very expensive professional Data Recovery specialist.

SF. ok update - i have managed to recover about 4000 files of all types - i now need to review and work out if i have recovered all my files. They have been renamed and mixed up, but not complain as at least i have something back.

SF thanks for advice but this Drive was a back up of the system and was moving files to NAS from PC (due to space issue) for a fully DR Exercise when the Drive failed. :(

I shall have to review my setup for future recovery.....
Any good software that you can use to fully back up all data on mulitple drives types?

Yet again many thanks for help so far.

There are many backup solutions you can google. Many External and NAS drives come with their own Backup Program bundled with the drive. I Personally just drag and drop or copy and paste the files I want to backup to my backup drive. You can try Easeus Todo Backup
