this is an inexperienced guy's problem. i've hit some key on my laptop which has activated the blue charactors on my keyboard when i shift to use caps or punctuation. how do i turn that function off and return to normal?

Look at your keyboard have you got a key Fn this may have stuck, try tapping it several times then restart your laptop.
