Hey Im new to the forum and know a decent amount about computers.I am currently deployed overseas. I have a toshiba satellite that I recently had to have a hard drive put in. Now it says out of my 4gb of ram i only have 2.84 useable. They guys working on it here put A WD hard drive in it. Not sure the specs. My old hard drive has HDD2H83 wrote on it. I was looking to change my hard drive again possibly. My computer has been slow and crazy acting since they have worked on it. I thought about using MK1059GSM toshiba hard drive but I wasnt sure about the compatibility. I would like to get the most performance out of my computer when I do this so if you recommend that I instal more RAM when I do this please let me know. I just wasnt sure if there was a hard drive/RAM compatibility issue I had since I only have 2.84 out of 4GB useable.

THanks in advance.

A hard drive would not affect the amount of usable memory in your system. Did they re-install a new operating system or move it from the old drive?
What is the specific model of the laptop ? I will assume for now your drive is a sata and not ide ? If you are running WIN7 and booted up the ram seems normal the OS uses 900 to 1.1GB the rest is for the apps and 4GB for Win7 is fine in most cases. Download hddscan and run it and post results lets see if something is up with the WD drive. Its also possible you are infected with sypware/malware.

I have the avg 2011 virus protection. It has new shown any viruses in the scans. Not sure what sata or ide means. I will do the hdscan
SATA and IDE are HDD interface types.

Using a 32bit OS, you are limited to 3 - 3.5GB of RAM. Sometimes less, especially on a system that shares RAM with the video chipset.
