Freezing at boot may be a virus, but usually not. Could be a hardware problem, but could also be a software problem. If you plan on reinstalling to clean it anyway and it still doesn't work, that will at least rule out software or virus.

You should be able to get the disks you need directly from IBM/Lenovo. Recovery disks usually cost around $20-$30 although I have seen them as high as $50. Much cheaper than buying a new copy of Windows.
Boot off of any XP CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
Hi kevjr60,

Does the computer boot into safe mode at least? I recommend getting the recovery disk fro IBM/Lenovo and perform a re-install of Windows. Make sure to backup any data that you might need that's still on that computer first.
I was assuming that, since he got the computer in this state from his friend, that a reinstall should be done without worrying about the data. It's not his anyway.
