ThinkPad R31 Monitor failure

I have a IBM ThinkPad R31 whose monitor has stopped working. The monitor will only display vertical lines, in an array of colors, which sometimes look like they are pulsing.

The computer runs fine and will work if hooked up to an external screen. I have attempted to fix the monitor by:
1. Updating the computer bios
2. Updating the monitor drivers
3. Updating the grahic controller driver (Intel 82830M)
4. Replacing the monitor
5. Replacing the motherboard
(4 and 5 were attempted seperately by another friend working on this machine).

Nothing seems to work, this machine is out of warranty and i am about out of ideas. Any help is appreciated.
