Hi, if you cannot access safe mode then you will not be able to use "last known good", which runs a registry backup. You will need a copy of the Vista OS and set your cd rom to be first boot device, (you do this in the BIOS). Boot with the OS dvd and select the "repair your computer" option, this is known as the RE. You will need to copy out these instructions:-

• Boot from Vista DVD
• Get in to WINRE
• Open command prompt
• Enter the following commands to fix the issue.
We need to determine what OS the RE assigned a drive letter to (not always C) so at the x sources prompt type:- bcdedit |find “osdevice” press enter (must inc the " the | is called a pipe and is located above the \ key, use the returned OS drive letter in the following cmds (assume C:).

Press enter after each cmd, you type the cmd's in RED.

C:
cd windows\system32\config
C:\windows\system32\config>ren default default.old
C:\windows\system32\config>ren sam sam.old
C:\windows\system32\config>ren security security.old
C:\windows\system32\config>ren software software.old
C:\windows\system32\config>ren system system.old

C:\windows\system32\config>cd regback

C:\windows\system32\config\regback>copy default c:\windows\system32\config
C:\windows\system32\config\regback>copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
C:\windows\system32\config\regback>copy security c:\windows\system32\config
C:\windows\system32\config\regback>copy software c:\windows\system32\config
C:\windows\system32\config\regback>copy system c:\windows\system32\config

Restart computer.

Thanks for the fast reply. I don't have access to a Vista cd atm. The only thing I have on me for the time being is a USB drive. Is having a Vista cd my only option?

Hi, for vista the only option is to use the OS dvd or the RE if it had been burned to a usb, you used to be able to download the RE unfortunately MS did not approve and the site was taken down. Any copy will do, if you can borrow one, has to be either 32 or 64 bit depends on your version, so see if you can borrow one.

Ah aright then thanks, I'll try to get a hold of one, the pc doesn't have the option to boot from a usb anyway. I'll post back to confirm issue was solved.

Thanks again
