Okay, I am new to this thread and felt there was nowhere else to turn. I am usually a 7/10 on a scale of how "computer savvy" I am; however now I am at a stoploss. I have the infamous Smitfraud-C on my laptop. I have a Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3. My issue is the constant number of pop-up ads that appear, and pop-up blocker cannot contain them. I also cannot use any search engines, because each time I click, I am constantly redirected to different sites. Yellowpages.com seems to be the most visited (and not by choice). My internet also is running extremely slow..highly unusual for me. I have searched online and read all about Smitfraud-C and even attempted to remove it on my own. I am seeing better results, but then again, we all know how computers are: they pretend to be okay, but are highly sick inside until BOOM! An extreme malfunction occurs.

What I attempted to do to remove it was:
1) Ran Virus Scan -AVG
2) Ran Spybot Search&Destroy. I had 42 things removed from Spybot. I carefully looked over the results and it appeared everything was removed. But I am extremely suspicious of that.
3) Disabled System Restore
4) Rebooted computer in and ran Virus Scan and Spybot again. (I attempted to run in safe mode, but for some reason, that option is not available at startup when I pressed F8. Interesting....)
5) Enabled System Restore.

Everything appears okay, but it is still "acting up" a bit as one would say. I would absolutely love any actual, bonafide help that can be given. :1angel:

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Download ResetTeaTimer

• and Save it to your Desktop.
• Double-click ResetTeaTimer.zip
• Double-click ResetTeaTimer.bat and click Run to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

While Spybot's TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

• Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
• In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
• Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
• Expand the "Tools" menu.
• Click "Resident".
• Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
• If TeaTimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
• In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

If for some reason during these fixes you receive prompts from Spybot about whether to accept or deny any changes, please Accept them all.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  
• Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'.

Save the logfile and post it here. Please close HijackThis now.
