I am retired and like to tinker with computers. Folks give me all these old cpu's to play with. Some are fried others have crashed, cause unknown. I like to see if I can "fix" them. I usually start but checking out the CD Roms to see if they are any good. Of course there are hard drives in them also. With out buying elaborate expensive software, how can I check out these drives to see if they are working or can be made to work? I have my own computers here that do work. A Dell, a Parckard Bell. I do not use the Dell for experimenting as it is my main CPU. I use the PB for that. It has Win 98 installed. Can I just insert the drives in the PB as slaves to check them?

Any help or website info would be appreciated.

Mr Bogart,

Power up the computers first. Try to run them. If they power up try to install an Operating System on them. If everything goes fine that means it is working. Tell us about where you have the problem. Like " it doesnt power up, doesnt boot up , gives error message, black screen, blue screen... " etc. So that we can help you.

If you check the hard drive manufacturers websites, most of them will have a utiliity that you can download for free. These utiliities will let you run diagnostics, zero fill the drive, etc..

Here are few.
Seagate
SeaTools Diagnostic Suite is Seagate's exclusive disc drive diagnostic software designed to troubleshoot most Seagate hard drive issues. Desktop edition works with most ATA, SATA, or SCSI drives in desktop systems and has a 98% accuracy rate.

Western Digital
The downloadable Data Lifeguard Tools now comes in both DOS and Windows versions and was written specifically for the installation of Western Digital EIDE hard drives. If your computer system already has a hard drive installed with an operating system of Windows 98SE or greater, you should use the Windows version of Data Lifeguard for best results. The DOS version is required if installing a hard drive in a new system without existing operating system support.

This download creates a self-booting DOS diskette to run the DFT utility. The Drive Fitness Test (DFT) provides a quick, reliable method to test SCSI and IDE hard disk drives, including Serial-ATA IDE drives. The Drive Fitness Test analyze function performs read tests without overwriting customer data. (However, Drive Fitness Test is bundled with some restoration utilities that will overwrite data.)

Free to download burn and use.
It contains most of the utilities you will need all on one bootable cd.
You can diagnose the system and prepare the drives if needed.
