I cannot get my windows system sounds to play. I can play any .wav or .mp3 file using any media player, but the windows system sounds will not play. I had on board sound and disabled it and installed a Creative sound card to no avail. The control panel "audio and sounds devices" sound window has the test button greyed out. Microsoft has not been able to solve this problem execpt to say that I may need to reinstall Windows. No way.
Windows XP Home, SP2. I have tried everthing I know including checking the codes, drivers, etc.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Open the Control Panel and double click Administrative Tools>Services. Scroll down to Windows Audio, highlight it and select Properties. The startup type should be set to Automatic

On the drop-down menu [in sounds tab of sounds & audio]does it have the choice of windows default. If so, when you set it to default the test button re-enables itself.
Sorry if you've already tried this.
