About 4 days ago my computer slowed to a complete crawl with no warnings what so ever and no changes that I made that could have caused this.

I've done a lot of research on this and I can't seem to find any fixes that will work for me.

Here are some fixes I have tried; I've taken out the battery and rebooted, taken out all of the USB devices, set the Windows Updater service to manual on startup, various virus scans (fairly confident I have no viruses).

I've also downloaded process explorer and the only thing under the System process is smss.exe which doesn't show any CPU usage. In addition, I downloaded a thing called Real Temp 3.40 and checked the temperature of my CPU.

Real Temp said my CPU was at 66 degrees but I feel like this is incorrect because it's pretty hot here in New York and I just can't see it being that low.

Right now I'm VERY FRUSTRATED! and my only course of action left right now is to take my computer apart and try to clean it out to see if the CPU is overheated.

Any responses will be completely appreciated and although it may take a while to respond to you (it took me like 30 minutes to post this because of the problem) I will definitely respond at some point.

THANK YOU!

Hi -

Was the temp 66°F or 66°C? 66°C = 151°F

Are you in A/C cooled room? I'm in New Jersey and can tell you that the 90°-100°F temps combined with the near 100% humidity can be a problem for a computer system.

Are you updated with Vista SP2 + all other Windows Updates?

www.update.microsoft.com

Boot into SAFEMODE and see if system performance is any different - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up.

Holy crap I didn't even think that it may be in celsius, it probably is!

I'm gonna go struggle a bit and make sure it is celsius. If it is, should I just clean the heat dump or something?

Thanks for the speedy response and enjoy the thunderstorm tonight ;P

Hi -

Well, I thought the temp reading was probably Celsius - or if Fahrenheit, you have a 2 ton A/C unit cooling a 10x15 room!

Use SpeedFan to check temps --> http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

After installation, RIGHT-click on SF icon, select "Run as Administrator". The temps are in C. See any flames?

Use compressed air to blow dust out but don't spray it directly into the vent as it may damage the fan blade.

A thunderstorm would be most welcomed today.

Ok I've confirmed that it is in fact 66 degrees celsius so I'm going to do my best to clean out some vents and cool this bad boy down.

I'm hoping this is the solution but I have a doubt; the computer has had this problem from start up ever since I initially had the problem 4 days ago. I've had the computer off for like 12 hours at one point in a room that was probably around 80 degrees which isn't good but certainly not horrible. I'm not sure the problem would arise right at start up if the overheating is the issue.

Also, I've tried the safe mode start up previously and the problem was the same while in safe mode.

Thanks again, nice to get help from the top :)

Update here. The cleaning/cool down didn't work. I also downloaded speedfan so the computer is much cooler at this point but the problem persists.

I thought it would be worth noting that there are 97 processes running and all I have actually initiated is task manager/speedfan. I must have a decent amount of things starting on start up but I don't think I have THAT many.

Really desperate here, if I don't fix it by this weekend I'm gonna bring it to best buy and apparently they'll fix it up for 50$. I'm totally ok with the price because this is insanely annoying (I've put like 30 hours into solving this with no progression at all) but I honestly don't think they'll be able to fix it. =\
